In W22 in the honey landscape, the EU funded HIVEOPOLIS project has developed a new robotic temperature modulation system composed of thermal sensors that give an overview of the collective behaviour of bees, opening the door to new possibilities to help bees survive in a changing climate. Bee colonies are susceptible to cold, and by collecting data on the bees' positions and providing warmer zones in the hive, bees would be encouraged to move around in nature during the winter. Turkish Beekeepers Centre Association (TAB) President Ziya Şahin called for increasing honey-producing areas in Turkey. 92% of pine honey in the world is produced in Turkey, and there is a production area of 100K hectares of pine honey with 40K MT of pine honey harvest. However, honey production regions have narrowed in recent years, despite the increase in bees. In 2002, there were 3M hive bees in Turkey, with 20kg of honey produced in each hive. However, only 14 kg per hive is produced now, despite there being 8M hive bees in the country.
In Poland, an additional USD 476,645 was contributed by the self-government of the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship for the purchase of bee houses as part of the agreement signed on Wednesday, May 31, with beekeeping associations. Since 2018, a total of USD 2.86M has been allocated to support apiaries in the region. Meanwhile in Italy, the regional beekeepers association (Aras) has filed an appeal as the Sicilian Region waives USD 855,476 of funding intended for the island's companies that produce honey. The FAESC and Senar invest in the beekeeping sector in Brazil through various initiatives, including the Technical and Managerial Assistance Program (ATeG) in Beekeeping and the ATeG Agroindustry of beekeeping establishments. The most recent technical workshop demonstrated feeding techniques for bees in the winter months. In addition, the programme addressed the management of varroa, a mite that feeds on the bee's hemolymph and causes the weakening of the swarm. At the moment, in the northern plateau region, blossoming is low, and the food supply for bees is nearly nonexistent. Producers are urged to be alert and keep their swarms strong for the next production cycle.
