Since its occupation in 1967, Israel has been unlawfully setting up date palm plantations in the Jordan Valley, part of the West Bank. The Israeli date industry, which generated 136,956 tons of dates in 2017, is criticized for its exploitative practices, including the use of illegal settlements and low-wage Palestinian labor, including child labor. The industry also redirects water resources from Palestinian villages. Under military pressure, the native Palestinian date industry finds it challenging to compete both locally and globally.
