A severe global shortage of Arabica coffee, which makes up approximately 60% of the world's production, is causing concern due to damage to crops from bad weather. This deficit, expected to impact the market for at least the next two years, has led some merchants to use cheaper Robusta beans for instant coffee, despite their stronger flavor and caffeine content. The crisis is exacerbated by destruction of coffee trees from drought and frost, increased fertilizer and labor costs, and shipping constraints for the large Robusta crop in Vietnam. Prices for Arabica beans have surged by nearly 80% this year, with the exact crop size still unknown.
