The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has awarded certification to Jeonnam Jindo abalone, marking it as eco-friendly seafood. The certification process, which is costly and requires strict environmental management and worker rights and safety guarantees, was achieved after Jindo-gun engaged in education, consulting, and examination since 2019. This certification is expected to boost the ailing abalone aquaculture industry and enhance its export competitiveness to China and Japan. The region is known for its clean sea and lack of red tide damage. Jindo-gun plans to extend this certification to seaweeds and will use administrative power to promote sustainable fishery and eco-friendly seafood production.
