The Lemon and Grapefruit Interprofessional Association (Ailimpo) is urging the Spanish government to approve protocols for global citrus exports. The Region of Murcia, a major lemon cultivation area, is seeking assurance that its producers can export to any part of the world without facing restrictions. The government agrees that the quality and standards of Spanish citrus surpass those of many third countries and sees potential in reaching all markets. The Region of Murcia also seeks to declare the lemon as a sensitive product to protect local produce from third-country imports. In 2021, Murcia became the leading lemon exporting province, tripling the exports of Alicante, with Germany being the main importer.
