Arvanitis' Question to the Commission: "Red Line" the Protection of Feta PDO in International Trade The need for immediate and decisive protection of Feta as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product is highlighted by the question of Syriza MEP and Left Group Vice President Kostas Arvanitis to the European Commission, denouncing not only the risk to Greek exports but also the undermining of the European system of Geographical Indications as a whole. "Feta" has been under PDO status in the EU since 2002, and the Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that member states must prevent the general use of the name "Feta" even for products intended for export to third countries. However, the United States is systematically promoting, through bilateral trade agreements with countries such as Indonesia, Argentina, and Bangladesh, "common names" clauses that recognize the term "feta" as a generic name.
