According to Australian media reports, following the bumper avocado harvest in Western Australia, the Shepard avocados in Queensland have also seen a large harvest, leading to an oversupply of fruit in the Australian domestic market. Lawrence Massasso, a grower from the Far North region of Queensland and a director of the Australian Avocado Association, said that the surplus avocados are flowing into the international market, with exports reaching record levels. This season, 20% of the Shepard avocados in Australia are being exported overseas, compared to 10% in previous years.
