The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has declared that meat products are safe to consume despite the detection of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 virus in dairy cows and milk. This declaration comes after APHIS tested 30 samples of ground beef from nine states where dairy farms were infected, all results being negative. However, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) has suspended beef imports from US entities with H5N1 positive cattle, a decision questioned by the North American Meat Exporters Federation (USMEF). APHIS is also planning a study on the inactivation of the virus by cooking ground meat at different temperatures.
