Beef: government works 'together with the private sector' to mitigate safeguard

The Ministries of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC), of Agriculture, and of Foreign Affairs informed, in a joint statement, that the Brazilian government "has been acting in a coordinated manner with the private sector and will continue to act with the Chinese government both at the bilateral level and within the framework of the WTO", with a view to mitigating the impact of the safeguard imposed on beef from Brazil and other exporting countries of the protein. The statement also says that the government "is closely monitoring the issue" and intends "to defend the legitimate interests of the workers and producers in the sector". According to the statement, the safeguard measures "are trade defense instruments provided for in the agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO) used mainly to deal with import surges".
