Polish agriculture is facing a decision that could significantly impact nitrogen management. Ongoing consultations regarding the implementation of the EU's RENURE regulations are paving the way for changes that seemed impossible until recently – primarily in terms of fertilization limits and the use of on-farm nitrogen resources. The current nitrate directive imposed one of the most restrictive limitations on farmers – a maximum of 170 kg of nitrogen from natural fertilizers per hectare. In practice, this meant serious problems for farms with high livestock production. Excesses of slurry or manure often had to be transported over long distances or subjected to costly management. This generated both costs and logistical problems. The introduction of RENURE can change this situation, as it allows some natural fertilizers to be treated similarly to mineral fertilizers.
