Bessent: 100% tariff from China does not actually need to happen, we are still in talks

By Laís Adriana São Paulo, 10/13/2025 - The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, stated that the 100% tariff against Chinese goods does not need to be enforced, in an interview this morning. According to him, the lines of conversation with Chinese authorities have been reopened and are ongoing this week, following the threat by American President Donald Trump on Friday. Bessent argued that the decision to re-impose export controls on rare earth goods may not have come from Chinese President Xi Jinping, but rather from a more rigid wing of the Chinese government. The Secretary stated that, in this case, Americans prefer to negotiate and resolve supply chain issues through dialogue, if possible. "We have other cards besides tariffs, but we do not want to exalt our power and our tools," he said, classifying the Sino-American trade relations as "good."
