Blueberries are experiencing a surge in global demand, with annual exports growing by 14% and reaching $480 million. However, Ukraine, a key producer, has seen a 16% annual decline in exports, as reported at the FTrade Berry Club 2021 in Kiev. The market is dominated by Asian countries and the European Union, with the coronavirus pandemic actually increasing demand. Countries in the Southern Hemisphere and Sub-Saharan Africa are becoming major producers, especially with advancements in greenhouse technology. Romania, Serbia, Zimbabwe, and Georgia are emerging as notable exporters, while Ukraine faces challenges due to its high production costs and lack of strategic advantages in the industry.
