Cabbage wholesale price jumps 75% in one week, concerns about kimchi shortage in South Korea

As harvest conditions deteriorated due to the rainy season and heatwave, the wholesale price of cabbage rose by more than 70% in a week. There are concerns that the “kimchi scarcity” phenomenon that occurred in September last year could repeat itself. According to the agricultural distribution information of the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) on the 6th, the wholesale price of cabbage on the 4th was an average of 20,240 won per 10kg (product standard), up 74.9% from a week ago. Compared to a month ago, it rose by 118.4% and by 2.8% from a year ago. The sharp rise in cabbage prices is interpreted as a decrease in supply due to soft rot. In general, soft rot is known to occur more easily when the temperature and humidity are high. If the disease spreads, the price of cabbage may rise further.
