Peru has successfully convinced China to recognize the country as free from foot-and-mouth disease, a significant achievement that is anticipated to boost meat exports to China by reaching up to one million metric tons annually and generating over US$ 5 billion in sales. This breakthrough, announced during the APEC Economic Leaders Week, will primarily benefit small breeders in Peru, allowing them to sell more meat at better prices, and is expected to be facilitated by the new port terminal in Chancay and reduced transportation costs. The process of recognizing Peru as a foot-and-mouth disease-free country began in 2013 and involved efforts by the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru.
