The Pampean caldén forest is the driest and southernmost portion of the espinal, a much larger ecoregion that encompasses a series of dry forests in Latin America. In this case, it involves about 2 million hectares that, due to their low potential for other productive activities, are usually dedicated to cattle ranching, and hence are exposed to degradation and overgrazing. After the original populations were displaced, cattle were reintroduced in the region around 1940, and since then the western pampas have become a hallmark of this activity in the center of the country. The effects of its proliferation over the past few decades on the flora and fauna of the region have spurred a discussion that has also been taking place in many other productive areas: the need to implement regenerative cattle ranching techniques to restore the health of the soils and grasslands, and to produce sustainably, respecting the timing of natural processes.
