(Yeongam=Yonhap News) Reporter Jo Geun-young = With the arrival of the fig season in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, consumers can now meet the figs delivered by rocket as early as dawn.
Yeongam County announced on the 22nd that it has started nationwide fig delivery in collaboration with e-commerce company Coupang and the Yeongam County Agricultural Cooperative Corporation, a joint business corporation of fig producers, through the 'Local Economy (Rokonomie) Collaborative Business'.
If ordered online ('Coupang Rocket Fresh') by 1 PM, figs harvested from Yeongam farms are delivered to consumers' doorsteps by 7 AM the next day.
The county and the joint business corporation reached an agreement with Coupang from May of this year to establish this distribution structure for direct delivery from the production site at dawn.
Figs, known as the oldest fruit cultivated by humans, are grown from August to November, and the season when the appearance of the fruit improves and the sugar content increases is around the end of August.
Yeongam figs, which are the first cultivation site in the country and account for more than 60% of the national production, have long been established as a representative summer fruit due to their excellent sugar content and crunchy texture.
Yeongam County Mayor Woo Seung-hee said on the 21st, "Now, the special taste of summer, Yeongam figs, can be met nationwide with direct delivery from the production site at dawn" and "Yeongam County will help create a healthy table with premium figs."
Meanwhile, Yeongam County will hold the '2025 Yeongam Fig Festival' for three days starting from the 5th of next month in the area around the Agricultural Museum in Samho-eup.
