(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Baek Na-yong = A Hanwoo steer from Jeju region has been shipped with the highest cross-sectional area of loin eye muscle ever recorded. According to the Jeju branch of the Korea Animal Products Quality Evaluation Service on the 30th, a 29-month-old Hanwoo steer raised by farmer Byun Cheol-hee in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, was shipped to a livestock auction on the 24th, and its loin eye muscle cross-sectional area was measured at 171 cm². This is 71 cm² larger than the national average (100 cm²), breaking the previous record in Jeju Island. The national record is 200 cm². This steer, after slaughter, weighed 525 kg, had a marbling score of 9, backfat thickness of 5 mm, and a meat quality index of 66.91, showing very excellent results. The marbling score is an indicator of how evenly fat is distributed within the muscle, with 9 being the highest level. The meat quality index is the ratio of meat obtained from slaughtering cattle, with higher numbers indicating greater economic value. A score of 67.2 or above is classified as A grade. The Livestock Products Association evaluated that the excellent results were due to the farmer's systematic feed supply and thorough feed management. Jeju Livestock Farmers Association Chairman Cheon Chang-su said, "This farm is a participant in the Jeju Hanwoo brand 'Bodeulkkeul' of the Jeju Livestock Farmers Association and the Holstein cow inspection demonstration project of the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives, and is playing a central role in improving Jeju Hanwoo."
