Development opportunities for Vietnamese fresh coconuts in the US and Chinese markets

Updated Nov 20, 2023
In August 2023, the United States officially allowed Vietnamese fresh coconuts to be exported to the country. Currently, coconut growers are very happy about this, and related companies are also preparing to expand production scale and meet market demand, especially export demand to the US market.

Pei Yangshu, manager of Mekong Fruit Import and Export Co., Ltd., revealed that the United States imports an average of about 2,000 containers of fresh coconuts from other countries every year.

However, Vietnamese companies export only 110 to 120 containers of fresh coconuts to the United States every year. This shows that there is still huge room for improvement in the market share of Vietnamese coconuts in the United States.

Following the United States, the General Administration of Customs of China also inspected coconut growing areas in Vietnam and decided based on the inspection results whether to allow Vietnamese fresh coconuts to be exported to the country’s market through formal trade channels.

In order to seize this precious opportunity, various competent departments, governments, groups, and localities in Vietnam are actively assisting farmers to grow coconuts that meet the standards to meet the requirements of "entering the American and Chinese markets".

When people mention Ben Tre Province, people will immediately think of the country’s coconut capital. Currently, the province’s coconut planting area accounts for about 40% of the country’s total and 46% of the Mekong Delta. Huang Quang Duc, deputy director of the Ben Tre Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said, the province’s coconut planting area ranks first in the country, with an area of more than 78,000 hectares and an annual output of more than 800 million coconuts, distributed in 9 counties across the province.

There are currently about 5 companies in Ben Tre Province exporting fresh coconuts to Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, and other markets. Currently, a total of 20 companies are involved in building fresh coconut packaging plants and creating planting area codes to prepare for exports to the Chinese market. S
