The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in South Korea has announced four items: improved clams, eels, anglerfish, and mussels, as the recipients of this year's free trade agreement (FTA) direct payment support for damage compensation. This initiative, which was introduced in 2008 with the Korea-US FTA, aims to offset the price drop experienced by fishermen due to increased imports of fishery products under the FTA. Since its inception, the direct payment for damage compensation in the fishery sector has totaled KRW 20.8 billion. Interested fishermen can apply for this support by the 8th of the next month through their local city/gun/gu, and payments will be made between November and December.
