In 2022, Hungary has planted 1,293 hectares of red onions, with a slight decrease from the 2010s, but with the cultivation of high-yield hybrid varieties. The country has experienced a 8% decrease in red onion imports in the first seven months of the year, with a 59% increase from Germany. The producer price of Hungarian red onions has increased by 21% and 32% for the current season compared to last year. The cultivation of spring-sown red onions was affected by wind and drought, but irrigations helped mitigate the yield loss. Despite the increased cultivation costs, the harvest was sold without difficulty and the prices were in line with European producer prices. The world market outlook indicates an 18% smaller onion crop in the Netherlands and a balanced market in Austria, while Germany has 20% fewer onions in storage.
