The global red meat industry is currently experiencing strong farmgate prices due to high demand and relatively low supplies, according to Edward Brown, Consultant at GIRA. This situation is expected to persist in the short-term. The demand for high-quality beef and lamb is particularly strong in the European Union, despite its production decreasing and increasing regulations. The EU's consumers continue to show strong demand for red meat, despite production being down. The prices for heavy lamb and beef in Europe are higher than in the UK. GIRA predicts that beef prices will remain at a similar level or slightly higher for the next 12 months. There are opportunities for suppliers of good quality lamb, like Welsh Lamb, in the global marketplace, especially with a focus on sustainability and traceability.
