In 2022, Egypt experienced a significant surge in maize imports, with the country spending 325 million and 490 thousand dollars in June alone, marking a 108 million and 706 thousand dollar increase compared to the same period in 2021. Maize is a crucial component of Egypt's raw material imports, which saw a total value of 992 million and 847 thousand dollars in June 2022, up from 769 million and 554 thousand dollars in June 2021. Additionally, imports of sesame and tobacco also increased, whereas imports of tobacco and smoke paper decreased. This surge in imports contributed to a notable decline in the trade balance deficit, which dropped to $3.21 billion in June 2022, a 12.4% decrease compared to the same month in the previous year.
