By Denise Luna Rio, 04/12/2025 - Brazil will need 77 million tons of fertilizers by 2050 to maintain its agricultural production, about 70% more than the current consumption, warned Embrapa Soil researcher Paulo Cesar Teixeira during the launch of the study "Petrochemicals and Fertilizers in Rio de Janeiro 2025", which is being held at the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan) this Thursday. "Fertilizers are extremely necessary for the energy and food security of Brazil and the world, and Rio de Janeiro has all the conditions due to the convergence of strategic raw materials, cutting-edge logistics, and intellectual capital," said Teixeira during the event. According to him, Brazil imports between 85% and 90% of all the fertilizer it needs, and the goal is to reduce this dependency to 50% by 2050.
