The European Union and China have reached an agreement to protect the Geographical Indications (GIs) of several products in each other's markets. The EU will protect Chinese products like Pixian Dou Ban, Anji Bai Cha, Panjin Da Mi, and Anqiu Da Jiang, while China will protect products such as cava, champagne, feta cheese, Irish whiskey, Münchener beer, Ouzo, Polish vodka, Porto, Prosciutto di Parma, and Manchego cheese. The agreement will be implemented over the next four years, with plans to extend it to an additional 175 IG names. The Chinese market presents a significant growth opportunity for European food and beverages, as it was the third largest destination for EU agri-food products in 2020, reaching 16.3 billion euros by November.
