The reduction in the pig population in EU countries is expected to cause a decrease in pork production in the European Union by 6.6% to 20.8 million tonnes in 2023, due to decreased profitability of breeding and the spread of African swine fever. In Poland specifically, the pig population in June 2023 was 1.8% lower than in June 2022, leading to a decline in pig slaughter and livestock supplies. From January to August 2023, industrial slaughter of pigs decreased by 5%, and over 1 million tonnes of live pigs were delivered to purchasing entities, 3% less than last year.
