EU pig population

The effect of reducing the pig population in EU countries is a projected reduction in pork production in the European Union by 6.6% to 20.8 million tonnes for 2023. This is related to the reduced profitability of breeding and the spread of African swine fever. In Poland, in June 2023, the pig population amounted to 9,436 thousand. pcs. and was lower by 1.8% than in June 2022. The number of fattening pigs decreased by 4.8% to 3,949 thousand. pcs., pigs for breeding by 2.6% to 601 thousand pcs. and piglets by 0.2% to 2015 thousand pcs., and the number of weaners increased by 1.5% to 2,871 thousand. pcs.
