In 2022, the European Union (EU) saw a decrease in pig slaughter numbers, with a total of 236.96 million pigs slaughtered, down from 249.57 million the year before. This marks the first time in ten years that fewer pigs have been slaughtered in the EU. The largest decreases were observed in Germany, Spain, Poland, and Denmark. The trend is expected to continue, with the EU pig supply projected to shrink further this year, as indicated by a 5.2% decrease in EU pig herds last year.
