Russian fishermen have experienced a significant increase in catches across various species in the early months of 2024. Far Eastern squid catches have risen by 27% from the previous year, reaching over 110 thousand tons. Pollock catches have also seen a slight increase, surpassing 1.9 million tons, and Iwashi catches have increased by 18% to over 570 thousand tons. Furthermore, Far Eastern herring catches have increased by 11% compared to the previous year. However, the total allowable catch of northern cod in the Barents Sea has been decreasing for the fourth year in a row, with a 16% decrease as of December 2024, and haddock and halibut catches have also seen significant decreases of 20% each compared to the previous year.
