[Reporter Hong Lan, Korea Farmers and Fishermen Newspaper] The National Institute of Forest Science under the Korea Forest Service is launching a full-scale "Demonstration Project for Restoring Matsutake Mushroom Production Areas in Forest Fire Damage Zones." This demonstration project targets Ulju County in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which suffered significant damage from the 2022 Donghae coastal forest fires. Ulju is a leading domestic matsutake mushroom production area, and the forest fires have severely damaged the matsutake harvesting areas, causing significant economic impact to the region. Therefore, the National Institute of Forest Science has decided to swiftly apply the results of artificial cultivation research using matsutake-infected seedlings and inoculated seedlings in the remaining areas where some matsutake mycelia still exist. This project is a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors.
