A green light has been given for domestic salmon farming. The Gyeongbuk Fisheries Resources Research Institute has successfully achieved artificial spawning, a key technology to replace imported salmon with domestically farmed salmon. According to Gyeongbuk on November 26, domestic salmon is a species that migrates in our rivers for spawning, and is different from the imported farmed Atlantic salmon that is commonly distributed as sashimi, sushi, and grilled salmon. With the recent surge in salmon consumption, the country imports over 40,000 tons of Norwegian Atlantic salmon annually. Domestic research institutions and some private fish farms have been conducting research to replace imported salmon with domestically farmed salmon.
