PARIS (Reuters) - France has stepped up health measures to stem a wave of bird flu cases on duck farms in the country's southwest, where a recent lull has been broken by outbreaks of the disease, the French agriculture ministry said on Friday. France was among the countries hardest hit by an unprecedented spread of avian influenza — commonly referred to as bird flu — around the world last year. The disease has claimed hundreds of millions of birds, disrupting poultry meat and eggs while forcing some countries, including France, to plan on-farm vaccination campaigns. Since May 4, 21 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian flu have been detected in southwestern France, mainly among ducks, the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement. Until last week, France had not seen any outbreaks since March 14, prompting authorities to lower the national alert level from high to moderate, the ministry said.
