Mato Grosso, Brazil's leading corn producing state, has seen a slower start to its safrinha corn harvest, with only 0.49% of the crop harvested as of last week, compared to 2.3% the previous year and a average of 0.54%. This is expected to result in a record corn crop for the 2022/23 season, which in turn will increase freight rates for transporting the crop to export facilities, potentially squeezing profit margins for farmers due to rising costs and falling corn prices. The long distance to ports and lack of storage space are also challenges for farmers. Nationwide, safrinha corn harvesting in Brazil is behind schedule, with only 0.8% harvested compared to 1.2% last year.
