"Freshwater eel landing quota system must be legalized"

The freshwater eel farming industry has strongly requested the government to legislate the introduction of a quota system in order to proactively respond to the discussion on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and to establish a stable supply and demand management system. The Korea Freshwater Eel Producers Association (President Shin Young-rae, hereinafter referred to as the Association) recently issued a statement requesting the government to actively pursue policies as the domestic market is collapsing due to a sharp drop in prices during the spawning season. The Association expressed gratitude to the government for the failure of the inclusion of eels in Appendix II of CITES at the 20th CITES General Meeting, attributing it to the national collaboration between the government, research institutions, and the industry.
