The freshwater eel farming industry strongly requested the government to legislate the introduction of a quota system in order to preemptively respond to discussions on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and to establish a stable supply and demand management system. The Korea Freshwater Eel Producers Association (President Shin Young-rae, hereinafter referred to as the Association) recently issued a statement, saying that the domestic market is accelerating its collapse due to a sharp drop in prices during the spawning season, and requested the government to actively push forward policies. The Association expressed gratitude to the government for the failure to list eels in Appendix II of the 20th CITES General Meeting, attributing it to the national cooperation between the government, research institutions, and the industry, and prepared for the CITES re-discussion three years later to ensure sustainable growth.
