African swine fever (ASF) has been present in Poland for 11 years. Prof. Benedykt Peplinski from the University of Natural Sciences in Poznan summarized the cost of this long-standing presence of ASF in the country. Contrary to expectations, the losses related to the outbreaks themselves are a small percentage of these costs, commented the scientist, quoted by farmer.pl. After 30 years: Spain confirms an ASF outbreak again "Paradoxically, but we lost the least when the virus appeared on farms. Our analyses show that one outbreak cost us an average of half a million zlotys (around 118 thousand euros), and we had almost 600 such farms. That amounts to approximately 300 million zlotys (nearly 71 million euros). However, this is just the tip of the iceberg: the huge costs are borne by all pig producers," said Prof. Peplinski. The expert pointed to the low prices of fattened pigs in the red zones as a major factor for the costs, averaging 0.70 zlotys per kilogram (0.17 euro cents/kg). ...
