The People's Committee of Binh Thuan province in Vietnam announced the protection of the geographical indication "Binh Thuan dragon fruit" in Japan on December 29, 2021. This marks the third foreign product and the second product from Vietnam to receive such protection in Japan. The provision of this protection is expected to enhance the competitive advantage of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in demanding markets like Europe, Korea, and New Zealand. Despite challenges such as low domestic consumption and the need for sustainable management, the export of dragon fruit from Binh Thuan has shown promising growth, accounting for 2-3% of total exports. The province aims to further promote the production, consumption, and export of dragon fruit by leveraging its protected geographical indication.
