Gimcheon-si in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, has received variety protection rights for its walnut seed, 'Gimcheon No. 1', for the next 25 years. This right, granted by the National Forest Breeding Center, allows the city to collect a 2% fee on the seedling price for any production and sale of the seedling. The city has been protecting four walnut seed varieties, developed in collaboration with the National Forest Research Institute, and plans to distribute them intensively from the next year.
