Growing potatoes is only allowed under strict requirements

According to the organizations, the disposal towards composting and animal feed is insufficient to resolve the surplus among potato growers. LTO Nederland and BO Akkerbouw remind growers of the applicable rules and guidelines, including the cultivation regulations, if they plan to return potatoes to the land. The Plant Health Regulation states that growers must not drive potatoes onto plots or land unless they ensure that no stems with leaves can develop. In concrete terms, this means that potatoes must be shredded, pulverized, and/or incorporated into the soil. It is crucial that cultivation regulations concerning phytophthora are then met, such as combating storage plants and preventing disease foci.
