The Golden Seed Project (GSP) has developed two new varieties of abalone, Super King Abalone No. 1 and 2, which are more resistant to high water temperatures and grow faster than regular abalone. These new varieties could potentially revolutionize the abalone aquaculture industry, which currently accounts for only 5% of the total shellfish farming production in Korea but generates 67% of the total revenue. The GSP Fisheries Seed Business Group plans to distribute these new seeds to abalone seed producers and has already distributed over 6.6 billion fertilized eggs this year, a significant increase from last year's distribution of 1.82 billion. Exports of these seeds to Japan have also started, with plans to expand into the North American market through trial production in Mexico. The development of these high-quality abalone seeds has been recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communication and has selected the project as a '2020 National R&D Project Excellence and Life & Marine Area'.
