The Global Tuna Alliance has criticized the EU and US for blocking a proposal to rebuild the endangered shortfin mako shark population at the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). The GTA, which includes influential tuna industry partners, is concerned about the conservation of mako sharks, which are commonly caught as bycatch in tuna fisheries. Despite the species being classified as endangered by the IUCN and listed under CITES Appendix II in 2019, overfishing continues, with the North Atlantic stock at risk of collapse and the South Atlantic stock in danger. The GTA is urging ICCAT to agree to protect shortfin mako sharks and is calling for a conservation plan to be agreed at the annual meeting in November.
