In 2025, Guangdong's longan harvest saw a fairly impressive yield. Maoming, known as a major longan production area in Guangdong and even nationwide, experienced a significant increase in production this year. In Chuliang Village, Gaozhou, Maoming, approximately 3,500 acres of longan were planted this year, with a yield increase of about 40% compared to the previous year. Shatian Town's longan planting area is about 43,000 acres, with a 2025 yield of approximately 40,000 tons.
In addition to Maoming, longan production in Zhanjiang, Yangjiang, and other areas also saw varying degrees of increase. The longan planting area in Yangjiang is about 85,000 acres, with an overall flowering rate of around 75%, and the yield is expected to increase to 46,000 tons. The Shijiao longan production area is about 13,000 acres, with a flowering rate of about 85%, and the yield is expected to increase to about 11,000 tons. The Chuliang longan production area is about 9,600 acres, with a flowering rate of about 75%, and the yield is expected to increase to about 6,800 tons. The Zhanjiang area also benefited from good weather and scientific planting management, with longan production steadily rising.
The change in yield directly affected the market price of longan. With a large amount of longan entering the market, prices showed noticeable fluctuations. The wholesale price of Chuliang longan quickly fell from its initial high, with some producing areas' purchase prices as low as 1-2 yuan/jin. The price of Shijiao longan was also not high, with wholesale prices in Dibai and other areas as low as 1.3-2 yuan/jin. Even the price of selected high-quality fruits saw a significant drop compared to last year. This price decline was partly due to the substantial increase in production, leading to a market supply exceeding demand. It was also related to the decrease in logistics costs and increased market competition. With the development of e-commerce, the direct-to-consumer model reduced intermediary links, making prices more transparent.
In the retail market, the price of Guangdong longan also decreased. In major supermarkets and fruit stores in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other cities, the retail price of longan generally ranged between 5-10 yuan/jin, with even lower prices during promotional activities. In some fruit wholesale markets in Guangzhou, the wholesale price of longan was as low as 3-5 yuan/jin.
Besides yield, many factors influenced the price of Guangdong longan. For example, Chuliang longan, known for its large fruit, small seed, thick flesh, crispness, and sweet honey flavor, has always been favored by consumers, and its price has been relatively high. Even with the overall price drop this year, the price of high-quality Chuliang longan remained at a relatively high level. With the development of cold chain logistics, the preservation period of longan has been extended, and the transportation range has expanded, but the logistics cost has also increased, which to some extent affects the terminal price.
