In 2024, the Egyptian Ministry of Supplies and Internal Trade plans to purchase 3.5 million tons of wheat from local farmers, a slight decrease from the 3.8 million tons bought the previous year. This move is part of an effort to encourage domestic wheat production by increasing the purchase price to 1,600 Egyptian pounds per ardeb, up from 1,500. Despite these incentives, the area dedicated to wheat cultivation in Egypt has remained steady at 3 million feddans. Meanwhile, the country's grain imports have risen by 14.5% in 2023, totaling 11 million tons, as Egypt continues to balance between boosting local agriculture and meeting its grain needs through imports.
