The Directorate of Horticulture is promoting the cultivation of five vegetables over 15,000 hectares during the upcoming rabi season, using a cold storage-centric cluster approach. The goal is to make the state self-sufficient and address the concern of inadequate production through expanding the area for cultivation and introducing adaptable varieties. The target includes 5,000 hectares each for potato and onion, and a similar area for tomato, cabbage, and cauliflower. The government will provide financial support totaling Rs 29 crore for potato and onion cultivation, and Rs 10 crore for tomato, cabbage, and cauliflower farming. This initiative is part of a larger plan to increase the potato cultivation area to 60,000 hectares by 2017-18, which was the target set by the State Potato Mission.
