India, Thailand, and China expand sugar production

According to the market intelligence coordinator of Hedgepoint, Lívea Coda, India's sugar production in 2024/25 fell short of expectations, totaling approximately 30 million gross tons. After the diversion of 3.4 million tons to ethanol production, the net production was 26.1 million tons. The country exported 800,000 tons in the season, with the possibility of transferring an additional 200,000 tons to 2025/26. According to Coda, the projections for 2025/26 indicate improvement. "The abundant rains in May improved the soil moisture and supported the early development of the crops. Reflecting this, the first estimate of the ISMA projects a gross sugar production close to 35 million tons. The diversion to ethanol is expected to be between 4 and 4.5 million tons, resulting in a net sugar production between 30.5 and 31 million tons.
