The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has set the harvest guideline for the Sitka Sac Roe Herring fishery at a record-breaking 45,000 tons for the spring of 2022. This is a significant increase from the 16,000 tons harvested last year, due to the favorable age distribution of the fish, with a high percentage being 6-year-olds. However, it remains to be seen if the market will be able to accommodate such a large harvest, given that only half of the guideline was harvested last year. The success of the fishery also hinges on the size of the fish, as in the years when the fish were too small, there were no fisheries. The final decisions regarding the fishery are expected to be made during the state Board of Fisheries’ Southeast Finfish & Shellfish meeting in March.
