(Daejeon=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Eun-pa = The Korea Forest Service announced on the 27th that Korea has been classified as a low-risk country in the European Union's Forest Deforestation Prevention Law (EUDR) country risk classification.
Of the 140 countries, including South Korea, North Korea, Russia, Belarus, and Myanmar were classified as high-risk countries, while Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia were classified as standard-risk countries.
The EU classified the EUDR risk levels primarily based on the degree of forest conversion to agricultural land for each country.
The EUDR stipulates that businesses intending to distribute seven products and their derivatives—including cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soybeans, rubber, and timber—to the EU must submit due diligence reports verifying that the production of these products is unrelated to deforestation and forest degradation.
The EU Forest Deforestation Prevention Law was introduced to prevent deforestation that causes greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss.
Nam Song-hee, the Forest Service's International Forest Cooperation Director, stated, "We will carefully monitor the trends to ensure that domestic companies exporting to the EU do not suffer disadvantages and seek practical support measures through consultations with relevant industries."
