Moldovan farmer associations are appealing to the government to extend the restrictions on the supply of grain from Ukraine, currently set to expire on December 31, until 2025. The associations argue that the import licensing regime needs to be maintained to safeguard the agricultural sector. They cite last year's liberalization of grain imports from Ukraine as an example of the detrimental effects on local farmers. In response, the Moldovan parliament had introduced a special license requirement for the import of certain crops in July 2024, a move initiated by the farmers' associations to shield local producers from foreign competition.
