Pepper farmers in Mandalay Region, Myanmar are facing challenges due to increasing agricultural inputs and falling export market prices. The cost of fertilizer, pesticide, and fuel are rising, making it difficult for farmers to break even. The current market price does not cover the cost per acre, and the pepper export market is collapsing with prices halving. The transportation of peppers to China for export is also facing issues due to Kovis disease, leading to damage of the peppers during inspection and transportation. As a result, farmers are unsure about planting pepper this rainy season due to market uncertainty.
