Mozambique plans to boost rice production to 355 thousand tons by 2029-30 to achieve self-sufficiency and cut down on imports, thereby improving food and nutritional security. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER) is seeking funds to support small family farmers in this endeavor. Currently, the country produces 161 thousand tons of rice per campaign. Initiatives include identifying potential producers and suitable areas, focusing on irrigation in specific provinces, and attracting investments for financing, training, and access to agricultural inputs. The strategy also highlights the importance of private sector involvement and sharing agricultural data between institutions.
