The government of the Region of Murcia in Spain is seeking approval to export citrus fruits globally, with a focus on ensuring quality and compliance with phytosanitary standards. The region, which leads in lemon exports in Spain, is concerned about competition and quality from other countries. It is also calling for better enforcement of agreements with third countries and training for border inspection staff to ensure only high-quality products enter Europe. The Region of Murcia has over 24,500 hectares dedicated to lemon cultivation, producing around 650,000 tons last season, and exported 430,000 tons in 2021, generating 455 million euros.
