New Zealand’s dairy exports explode in January

What a way to start off the year for New Zealand’s exports. Total dairy export volumes increased 14% year on year (YoY) in January 2023, with 341,765mt of dairy exported. This is the fourth-largest January in NZ dairy export history, and the largest since 2020. From a value perspective, total dairy exports increased 20% YoY with US$1.5 billon exported in January. This is the second-largest January of export values achieved for NZ, only 2% lower than the record year of 2014. Every major export partner of NZ increased their purchase volumes of dairy, with even China reporting an increase of 5% YoY for dairy purchases. Notably, China’s market share of NZ dairy export volumes declined 3%, owning 32% of the market in 2023, while Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and Australia increased their market share 1% each.
