The UK's National Farmers Union (NFU) Conference saw discussions on the progress of trials for a new bovine tuberculosis (bTB) vaccine and skin test, as part of efforts to combat the disease that costs the English taxpayer £100m per year. Agriculture Minister, Henry Smith, acknowledged the need for continued resilience in the industry, without committing to specific measures. NFU president, Minette Batters, urged the government to deliver on its promises to the farming sector, while Labour leader, Keir Starmer, proposed solutions for addressing worker shortages, including technological innovation and a more resilient farming model. He also stressed the importance of maintaining high standards in trade deals to protect UK food producers.
